Most visitors to Tofino head to Long Beach or the town's restaurants. The wild side is the stretch of coast south of town — old-growth rainforest, boardwalk trails through Sitka spruce, and beaches where driftwood piles higher than a person and the Pacific arrives in long, clean lines.
The trail through the cathedral
The Rainforest Trail in Pacific Rim National Park winds through moss-draped cedar and spruce trees that have stood for centuries. Boardwalks keep your feet dry and protect the forest floor. The air smells of wet bark and salt. Every few minutes the canopy opens and you catch a glimpse of grey ocean through the green.
The beaches nobody posts about
South Beach and Florencia Bay see a fraction of the crowds at Long Beach. In winter, storm-watchers come to see waves that have crossed an entire ocean hit the shore. In summer, the sand is wide and often empty. Bring a windbreaker either way.
What to expect
Rain is not a possibility — it is a feature. The park is open year-round but some facilities reduce hours in winter. Cell service is spotty. That's the point. Pack lunch, start early, and let the trail set the pace.
